Sudoku Difficulty Levels Explained: What Makes a Sudoku Hard?
Updated:
A sudoku's difficulty is set by the hardest solving technique it requires, not by how many numbers it starts with. Easy puzzles need only singles, Medium adds Pointing Pair, Hard needs pairs or triples, Expert needs patterns like X-Wing or XY-Wing, and Master needs chains such as Skyscraper. The number of starting clues matters much less.
Difficulty is about technique, not clue count
It is tempting to judge a puzzle by its empty cells, but a puzzle with only 24 clues can be easy if every step is a single, and a puzzle with 28 clues can be very hard if one step needs an X-Wing.
That's why serious puzzle graders rate a sudoku by solving it the way a human would and recording the hardest technique used. Sudoku AI Coach does the same: a solver that uses only human techniques solves every puzzle before it is included.
The six levels in Sudoku AI Coach
Each level is defined by the hardest technique a puzzle needs, and every puzzle above Easy must actually use at least one technique from its own level, so levels don't overlap. The table below comes straight from the rules the puzzle generator uses.
| Difficulty | Techniques that define the level | Starting numbers |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner | Hidden Single | 38–45 |
| Easy | Hidden Single, Naked Single | 32–36 |
| Medium | Pointing Pair, Box/Line Reduction | 27–32 |
| Hard | Naked Pair, Hidden Pair, Naked Triple, Hidden Triple | 24–29 |
| Expert | X-Wing, Swordfish, XY-Wing, XYZ-Wing | 22–27 |
| Master | Skyscraper, 2-String Kite, Unique Rectangle, BUG+1, Empty Rectangle, W-Wing, Naked Quad, Hidden Quad, Finned X-Wing, Jellyfish | 21–26 |
How this compares with other apps
Labels differ between apps, but roughly:
- Easy and Medium in most apps match our Easy and Medium: singles, then Pointing Pair.
- "Hard" in most apps usually means pairs and triples, like our Hard.
- "Expert" usually means X-Wing or XY-Wing, like our Expert.
- "Extreme", "Evil" or "Diabolical" puzzles often need short chains like Skyscraper or uniqueness patterns, like our Master. Some apps also put puzzles that need trial and error here; ours never require guessing.
How many clues does a sudoku need?
The minimum number of clues for a sudoku with a single solution is 17, proven by an exhaustive computer search in 2012. Puzzles with so few clues are not necessarily hard, though.
In Sudoku AI Coach, the starting numbers range from 38–45 at Beginner down to 21–26 at Master, but the technique requirement is what really separates the levels.
How every puzzle is checked
Every built-in puzzle (400 per level) is checked before it ships:
- It has exactly one solution.
- It can be solved to the end using only the techniques allowed for its level, without guessing.
- It uses at least one technique that the level below doesn't allow.
- Its number of starting clues is within the range for its level.
The daily puzzle is the same for everyone on a given day.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a sudoku hard?
The hardest logical technique needed to solve it. Puzzles that need only singles are easy; puzzles that need pairs, fish like X-Wing, or chains are progressively harder, regardless of how many numbers are given.
Are sudokus with fewer clues harder?
Not necessarily. Fewer clues usually means more steps, but difficulty comes from the techniques required. A 17-clue puzzle can be easier than a 28-clue puzzle.
What is the difference between Hard and Expert sudoku?
In Sudoku AI Coach, Hard puzzles need naked or hidden pairs and triples, while Expert puzzles need at least one of X-Wing, Swordfish, XY-Wing or XYZ-Wing.
What is the hardest sudoku level?
Master is our hardest level. Its puzzles need techniques such as Skyscraper, 2-String Kite, W-Wing, Empty Rectangle or Unique Rectangle, but never guessing.
